Pink slime sites look like local newspapers - a town name in the masthead, a homely design - but the content is produced centrally, often to a political or commercial brief, by people or software with no connection to the place.
They work because they borrow trust that local papers spent decades earning. In the United States, sites built this way now outnumber the real local newspapers they imitate.
